Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg (Mainz, ca. 1400 – aldaar, 3 februari 1468) was een Duitse drukker die geldt als de uitvinder van de boekdrukkunst in Europa. Hij werkte in Straatsburg (ca. 1440) en Mainz (ca. 1450). Zijn bekendste werk is de in 1455 voltooide Gutenbergbijbel.
De veelgehoorde bewering dat Gutenberg de boekdrukkunst zou hebben uitgevonden, is misleidend. De blokdruk bestond al langer; daarbij werd een hele bladzijde uit één blok vervaardigd. Als zo’n bladzijde achteraf moest worden gecorrigeerd en geredigeerd, moest er een heel nieuw blok worden gesneden.
Gutenbergs grote verdienste bestaat in het gebruik van losse letters. Door Gutenbergs vinding werden correctie en redactie gemakkelijker en goedkoper; kleine veranderingen in het zetsel waren nu voldoende.

A 1996 memoir by the Irish-American author Frank McCourt. The memoir consists of various anecdotes and stories of Frank McCourt's childhood. The memoir details his very early childhood in Brooklyn, New York, but focuses primarily on his life in Limerick, Ireland. It also includes McCourt's struggles with poverty and his father's alcoholism. The book was published in 1996, and won the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography. The sequel 'Tis was published in 1999, followed by Teacher Man in 2005. Plot summary Born in Brooklyn, New York, on 19 August 1930, Frank (Francis) McCourt is the oldest son of Malachy and Angela Sheehan McCourt. Theatergroep NTGent maakt hiervan in 2005 een theaterbewerking onder leiding van Johan Simons .VerhaalChristian Beck, een vertaler van technische handleidingen, is tot de conclusie gekomen dat het leven uit zelfbedrog en illusies bestaat. Hij heeft besloten zich te wijden aan het ontmaskeren van alle illusies, valse verwachtingen en hoge idealen. Hij noemt zichzelf "de grote ontmaskeraar", en ontmaskert iedere illusie van zijn omgeving als zelfbedrog. Het enige waar hij nog voor leeft is zijn vriendin, ‘de vogel’. Het paar heeft een tijd in Eilat gewoond, waar Beck een vaste klant in een bordeel werd. 'De vogel' ging op haar beurt naar bed met lelijke en mismaakte mannen. Terug in Europa, in Göttingen, blijkt dat 'de vogel' lijdt aan een dodelijke ziekte. Voor zij sterft trouwt zij met een asielzoeker uit Algerije, om hem nog een verblijfsvergunning te kunnen bezorgen. Beck protesteert aanvankelijk, maar stemt later toch toe als getuige met dit schijnhuwelijk. Ondanks zijn pogingen de vogel gelukkig te maken, kan hij haar dood uiteindelijk niet voorkomen. Een bloedige aanslag op de Amsterdamse seksclub Yab Yum doet Christian nog één keer naar zijn geboortestad terugkeren. Hij is daar de gast van een talkshow, wegens het mogelijk verband met de herpublicatie van een oud verhaal van Christian over iets soortgelijks. Hij heeft net een nare droom gehad over een man met een bolhoed die het huis binnenkwam en ineens in een doodskist lag, die eerst dagenlang bleef staan waarna er bij het begraven van alles misging. Weer thuisgekomen stelt Frits vast dat de dag zinloos voorbij is gegaan, nadat hij overdag verschillende malen op zijn horloge heeft gekeken. Die nacht heeft Frits alweer een nare droom, ditmaal over krijtwitte mensen met uitpuilende ogen en kreeftenscharen in plaats van armen.Op maandag 23 december komt Frits om half vijf terug van zijn werk, vervuld van naargeestige gedachten. Na het eten bezoekt hij zijn broer Joop en diens vrouw Ina, waarna de drie naar een reünie gaan van het Berendsgymnasium dat Joop wel heeft afgemaakt en Frits niet. Frits voelt zich hierom "de mislukte", en tijdens de reünie houdt hij zich uit schaamte afzijdig tegenover zijn vroegere schoolgenoten. Verzamelde vertelsels en verzen ‘Ik word wakker, doe een plas, sta op en denk: Verrek, het moest andersom.’ Of, zoals Finkers ooit al zei: ‘De leukste grappen zijn de grappen die niet zijn bedacht, maar ja, bedenk die maar eens.’ In oneliners als deze, maar ook in verzen als: ‘Ik zit voor het raam, ik fluister zacht haar naam: Veldhuis,’ wordt bij Finkers het ongerijmde geloofwaardiger dan het gezond verstand, dat immers al genoeg ellende veroorzaakt. Zijn wijsheden worden evenveel geciteerd in het café als op filosofencongressen. Finkers op papier is plezier waar je lach- en denkrimpels van krijgt. De donkere kamer van Damokles vertelt het verhaal van Henri Osewoudt, sigarenhandelaar te Voorschoten. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog ontmoet hij de verzetsman Dorbeck, die sprekend op hem lijkt en die hem opdrachten geeft die hij gewillig uitvoert. Naar aanleiding van zijn daden wordt Osewoudt gevangen genomen, komt weer vrij, pleegt een moord, en nog een moord. Na de bezetting lijkt alles zich tegen hem te keren en wordt hij gekwalificeerd als landverrader. Zich beroepen op Dorbeck blijkt onmogelijk: er is geen enkel spoor dat leidt tot deze man. Het enige dat Osewoudt heeft om de wereld Dorbecks bestaan te bewijzen is een camera met een foto van Dorbeck erin, maar ook die foto blijkt uiteindelijk niet te bestaan. Bestaat Dorbeck echt of heeft Osewoudt hem verzonnen? In hoeverre is Osewoudt zelf verantwoordelijk voor zijn daden? Wie ben je als iedereen je ziet als een verrader en een leugenaar, bestaat er wel zoiets als waarheid en werkelijkheid? Om dergelijke vragen gaat het in dit huiveringwekkende boek, dat uitgroeide tot Hermans meest gelezen en bejubelde roman. - De heks en de archeoloog

Door wanhoop gedreven wendt een archeoloog zich tot een vriend, een psychiater, die hem een zelfanalyse suggereert waaruit blijkt dat zijn geestelijke onevenwichtigheid veroorzaakt is door bovennatuurlijke gebeurtenissen tijdens zijn verbintenis met een geliefde vrouw. • De archeoloog Kris Waterschout denkt zijn grote liefde te hebben gevonden bij Gina. Maar na een reeks verwarrende gebeurtenissen kan hij niet anders concluderen dan dat zij hem alleen pijn doet. Hij roept de hulp in van een psychiater, die vaststelt dat Gina aan hysterie lijdt. Maar Kris ontdekt in de archieven van de heksenverbrandingen dat dat hysterie en hekserij dicht bij elkaar liggen, en dat hysterische vrouwen vaak als heks verbrand werden. Gina blijkt een heks te zijn, die er alles aan doet om hem te gronde te richten. Kris en zijn psychiater moeten alles op alles zetten om Gina te stoppen. De heks en de archeoloog schreef Lampo in 1967. Het boek is een uitzonderlijk voorbeeld van zijn vertellerstalent: magisch-realistische elementen en psychologische motieven zijn verweven tot een roman die Lampo tot zijn beste werk rekent. - De lange weg naar de vrijheid

Het stond weken bovenaan de Spaanse bestsellerlijst, en werd geprezen door de Duitse ex-vice-premier en ex-minister van buitenlandse zaken Joschka Fischer.In Barcelona, de stad waar het boek zich grotendeels afspeelt wordt echter kritiek geleverd op het feit dat Zafón het boek in het Spaans geschreven heeft in plaats van het Catalaans.Zafóns tweede roman, een prequel op De schaduw van de wind, verscheen in mei 2009. Het boek heet Het spel van de engel en speelt zich ook af in Barcelona tijdens de jaren 20 en 30 van de twintigste eeuw. Plot: David Lurie is a South African professor of English who loses everything: his reputation, his job, his peace of mind, his dreams of artistic success, and finally even his ability to protect his own daughter. He is twice divorced and dissatisfied with his job as a 'communications' lecturer, teaching one class in romantic literature at a technical university in Cape Town in post-apartheid South Africa. Lurie's sexual activities are all inherently risky. Before the sexual affair that will ruin him, he becomes attached to a prostitute and attempts to have a romantic relationship with her (despite her having a family), which she rebuffs. He then seduces a secretary at his university, only to completely ignore her afterwards. His "disgrace" comes when he seduces one of his more vulnerable students, a girl named Melanie Isaacs, plying her with alcohol and other actions that arguably amount to rape"; later, when she stops attending his class as a result, he falsifies her grades. Lurie refuses to stop the affair, even after being threatened by Melanie's erstwhile boyfriend, who knocks all the papers off Lurie's desk, and her father, who confronts him but whom David runs from. This affair is thereafter revealed to the school, amidst a climate of condemnation for his allegedly predatory acts, and a committee is convened to pass judgement on his actions. David refuses to read Melanie's statement, defend himself, or apologize in any sincere form and so is forced to resign from his post. Ecce homo. Wie man wird, was man ist ist eine autobiographische Schrift des Philosophen Friedrich Nietzsche. Nietzsche arbeitete von Oktober 1888 bis zu seinem Zusammenbruch Anfang 1889 an dem Werk, das zum ersten Mal 1908 im Auftrag des Nietzsche-Archivs veröffentlicht wurde. Na verschillende vruchteloze pogingen om ook maar enigszins greep te krijgen op zijn proces (K. komt er zelfs nooit achter waarvan hij beschuldigd wordt), zwicht Josef K. Gedwee laat hij zich op zijn 31e verjaardag meevoeren naar een steengroeve waar het over hem geveld doodvonnis wordt voltrokken middels een dolksteek in zijn hart. - Ilias

De Ilias (zo genoemd naar de andere naam van Troje, Ilion) beschrijft 51 dagen uit het 10e jaar van die oorlog. De voorgeschiedenis van die episode komt slechts terloops aan de orde: de schaking van Helena, de dochter van Leda en Zeus, gehuwd met koning Menelaüs van Sparta, door Paris, de zoon van koning Priamus van Troje, de veldtocht om Helena te bevrijden onder leiding van Agamemnon en gebeurtenissen tijdens de eerste zes jaar van het beleg. Het eigenlijke thema van de Ilias is de wrok van Achilles jegens de Griekse leider Agamemnon: ruzie om een buitgemaakte slavin. Achilles onttrekt zich hierom aan de strijd; militaire rampspoed voor de Grieken is daarvan het gevolg. De dood van Achilles' wapenmakker Patroclus doet Achilles weer aan de strijd deelnemen om zich te wreken op de Trojaanse held Hector. De uitvaart van Hector is de laatste episode van de Ilias. Het sneuvelen van Achilles, die getroffen zou worden in zijn spreekwoordelijk geworden achillespees en de inname van Troje middels de klassieke krijgslist van het Paard van Troje, komen er niet in voor. Max Havelaar: Or the Coffee Auctions of the Dutch Trading Company is an 1860 novel by Multatuli, which played a key role in shaping and modifying Dutch colonial policy in the Dutch East Indies in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. In the novel, the protagonist, Max Havelaar, tries to battle against a corrupt government system in Java, which was then a Dutch colony.BackgroundBy the mid-nineteenth century, the colonial control of the Dutch East Indies (present-day Indonesia) had passed from the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to the Dutch government due to the economic failure of the VOC. In order to increase revenue, the Dutch colonial government implemented a series of policies termed the Cultivation System (Dutch: cultuurstelsel), which mandated Indonesian farmers to grow a quota of commercially crops such as sugar and coffee, instead of growing staple foods such as rice. At the same time, the colonial government also implemented a tax collection system in which the collecting agents were paid by commission. The combination of these two strategies caused widespread abuse of colonial power, especially on the islands of Java and Sumatra, resulting in abject poverty and widespread starvation the farmers. The colony was governed with a minimum of soldiers and Government officials. The former rulers maintained their absolute power and control over the natives. A quite common strategy used by many colonizing countries. In addition, the Dutch state earned a fortune with the sale of opium to the natives, this opium-trade was started centuries before during the VOC-times. At that time opium was the only known effective pain killer, and a considerable part of the natives was hooked on it, being kept poor in this way. This was called the "opium-regime". The title, never explained in the text of the book, is a verse found in Psalm 60 and Psalm 108. Through wearing sandals, people's feet would become filthy in the dusty desert environment and upon entering a home feet would be washed with water by pouring water over them into a washpot. Moab, which had threatened Israel, was to be so completely subdued, and so became likened to a wash pot or basin. This title was selected because Fry saw the book as "scrubbing at the grime of years". Matthew Osborne. In a 2001 article for the Evening Standard, Andrew Bellin wrote that Fry was reunited with "Osborne" after the publication of the book: Many pages of the deepest purple are devoted to this Matthew Osborne, "the most beautiful thing I had ever seen in my life". I ask if the pseudonymous Matthew, with whom he eventually achieved some form of splendour in the long grass, had been in touch since the book came out in 1997. He had. - Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984)

Nineteen Eighty-Four, often published as 1984, is a dystopian novel published in 1949 by English author George Orwell. The Party "seeks power entirely for its own sake. It is not interested in the good of others; it is interested solely in power." The protagonist of the novel, Winston Smith, is a member of the Outer Party, who works for the Ministry of Truth (or Minitrue in Newspeak), which is responsible for propaganda and historical revisionism. His job is to rewrite past newspaper articles, so that the historical record always supports the party line. The instructions that the workers receive portray the corrections as fixing misquotations and never as what they really are: forgeries and falsifications. A large part of the Ministry also actively destroys all documents that have not been edited and do not contain the revisions; in this way, no proof exists that the government is lying. Smith is a diligent and skillful worker but secretly hates the Party and dreams of rebellion against Big Brother. It’s not by chance that one of the novel’s mottos comes from Andrea Dworkin: ‘The symbols of terror are commonplace and utterly familiar: the gun, the knife, the bomb, the fist, and so on. Even more significant is the hidden symbol of terror, the penis.’ This goes beyond the father-son competition between Ludwig and Hans, in which the failed son, with his premature ejaculation, proves to be no match for his masculine tyrant of a father – the supreme god whom a Russian assistant accidentally refers to as ‘Trump’. In Bonita Avenue, a father is ruined by his rotten offspring; in Otmar’s Sons the offspring turn against the almighty fathers. Isabelle, the most transgressive figure to date, seems to go the farthest. Cited as a key example of the literary technique of multiple focalizations, the novel includes little dialogue and almost no action; most of it is written as thoughts and observations. The novel recalls childhood emotions and highlights adult relationships. Among the book's many tropes and themes are those of loss, subjectivity, the nature of art and the problem of perception. In 1998, the Modern Library named To the Lighthouse No. 15 on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In 2005, the novel was chosen by TIME magazine as one of the one hundred best English-language novels since 1923. Plot summary Part I: The Window The novel is set in the Ramsays' summer home in the Hebrides, on the Isle of Skye. The section begins with Mrs Ramsay assuring her son James that they should be able to visit the lighthouse on the next day. This prediction is denied by Mr Ramsay, who voices his certainty that the weather will not be clear, an opinion that forces a certain tension between Mr and Mrs Ramsay, and also between Mr Ramsay and James. This particular incident is referred to on various occasions throughout the section, especially in the context of Mr and Mrs Ramsay's relationship. Part II: Time Passes The second section, "Time passes", gives a sense of time passing, absence, and death. Ten years pass, during which the First World War begins and ends. Mrs. Ramsay dies, as do two of her children – Prue dies from complications of childbirth, and Andrew is killed in the war. Mr. Ramsay is left adrift without his wife to praise and comfort him during his bouts of fear and anguish regarding the longevity of his philosophical work. This section is told from an omniscient point of view and occasionally from Mrs. McNab's point of view. Mrs. McNab worked in the Ramsay's house since the beginning, and thus provides a clear view of how things have changed in the time the summer house has been unoccupied. Part III: The Lighthouse In the final section, "The Lighthouse", some of the remaining Ramsays and other guests return to their summer home ten years after the events of Part I. Mr. Ramsay finally plans on taking the long-delayed trip to the lighthouse with daughter Cam(illa) and son James (the remaining Ramsay children are virtually unmentioned in the final section). The trip almost does not happen, as the children are not ready, but they eventually set off. As they travel, the children are silent in protest at their father for forcing them to come along. However, James keeps the sailing boat steady and rather than receiving the harsh words he has come to expect from his father, he hears praise, providing a rare moment of empathy between father and son; Cam's attitude towards her father changes also, from resentment to eventual admiration. They are accompanied by the sailor Macalister and his son, who catches fish during the trip. The son cuts a piece of flesh from a fish he has caught to use for bait, throwing the injured fish back into the sea. While they set sail for the lighthouse, Lily attempts to finally complete the painting she has held in her mind since the start of the novel. She reconsiders her memory of Mrs. and Mr. Ramsay, balancing the multitude of impressions from ten years ago in an effort to reach towards an objective truth about Mrs. Ramsay and life itself. Upon finishing the painting (just as the sailing party reaches the lighthouse) and seeing that it satisfies her, she realises that the execution of her vision is more important to her than the idea of leaving some sort of legacy in her work. - Top 100
